Paradise Ranch

Paradise Ranch is nearing the time for release. Yesterday, I had a talk with one of the authors and she believes the book may be actually two books. Sometimes we, as authors, are not fully in charge of where our plot, theme and characters will take us. This is a true example of that. The sections of the book with the ghost horse are fanciful and childlike. There are other sections of the book which contain evil, murder and sex. That splits the genre into two entirely separate works. The author has yet to decide what she will do. “We are going to finish the book and see.” I am reminded of Oscar Wilde. He wrote a dark novel called The Picture of Dorian Gray. He wrote humorous plays and he wrote fairy tales such as The Happy Prince. We have seen before how one author can write in several genre. However, this single book contains adult fiction and fairytale-like fantasy, all in the same work. The fantasy is interesting to adults but the sex and violence are not for children. When I asked the author what she will do, she answered, “We will see.”

Gyla Beth Seal and January Taylor

Gyla Beth Seal and January Taylor have been working together for several years. Occasionally they are asked how they keep their partnership from interfering with productivity. “We have a working relationship,” said January. “If I write the first draft of a novel or short story, Gyla reads with me and makes suggestions, but I have veto power and the right to ignore anything she says. Of course I take everything into consideration. If Gyla write the first draft, we both work on getting the story ready for publication but she has the right and power to ignore me. It’s a system that has worked well for us.”2018
